The actor, producer and singer Emil Kárlsen comes from Omasvuotna/Storfjord. As a musician and songwriter, he revitalizes the Coast Sami joik tradition together with his distinctive touch of pop, folk and country. His home region, like many other Sami areas, has historically lived under the pressure of strong assimilation politics. Emil sees his music as a way to lift and honor the Sami identity and his heritage. His music captures both the traditional and modern spirit of Sápmi. Emil sings heart-opening and vivid stories that invite the listener to wander among the widest of landscapes. His beautiful voice holds both a young hopeful expression yet an ancient wisdom. As an actor, he plays one of the main characters in the upcoming series “Koka björn”, “How To Cook a Bear”, based on Mikael Niemi’s book with the same name.
